We’re getting into the Christmas spirit here at the Johnson City Public Library! The East Tennessee Children’s Choir (ETCC) and Towne Acres Elementary School’s 4th Grade Chorus are helping us do that through song. ETCC will perform on Monday, December 3 from 6-6:30 p.m., and the children’s choir from Towne Acres will join us on Wednesday, December 12 from 12-12:30 p.m. Both groups will sing holiday favorites in front of the Christmas tree in the Buffalo Mountain Room.
ETCC has kicked off the Christmas season at JCPL for the last several years, performing on the first Monday in December. Youth Services Manager Betty Cobb says, “Hosting this program has been a thrill for us; the patrons and staff love hearing the kids’ voices as they echo through the stacks. Taking time to listen to them always leaves people in a pleasant, peaceful mood before all the hustle and bustle of the season begins.”
ETCC is made up of 4th-12th graders from all over East Tennessee, and is part of the Mountain Empire Children’s Choral Academy (MECCA). Students who participate in ETCC gain a musical repertoire that includes both classic choral pieces as well as regional music that represents their Appalachian heritage. You can learn more about ETCC and MECCA here.
The Towne Acres’ chorus is comprised of 4th grade students at the elementary school. The group has performed at JCPL many times. Brent Billheimer, the fourth grade music teacher and choir director, says the students always look forward to singing at the library. “It is amazing how wonderful they sound singing from the second floor, which has such good acoustics!”
