Know the Facts: Addiction and the Opioid Epidemic event

There’s a lot of noise about addiction and the opioid epidemic affecting our area and the nation at large. But do you know the facts? We’re partnering with the Washington-Unicoi-Johnson County (WUJ) Medical Alliance and Insight Alliance to bring you a community forum that does just that. Know the Facts will be at 3:00 PM on Sunday, April 22 in the Jones Meeting Center here at the Johnson City Public Library. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is recommended to assist in planning the event, but registration is not required. Click here to register.

Lisa Krekelberg, Adult Services Librarian at the Johnson City Public Library, says, “with the epidemic so widespread, we thought we should tell people how to find help and what resources are available.” Julie Wood, Health Promotions Chair for WUJ Medical Alliance, agrees “Tennessee has close to the highest rate of prescription opioid abuse in the country, and Northeast Tennessee has the highest rate in Tennessee.”

This program will include a video, testimonials, panel of experts, free lockboxes, and informational handouts providing local contacts. Both healthcare professionals and the general public are invited to attend this free event. Lisa continues, “this event is perfect for anyone with a first-hand connection to opioid addiction or someone who’s just curious about the issue.” Julie says, “we hope people will learn the facts about the epidemic and how it is affecting our region. Attendees can ask questions of the professionals during a Q & A time and learn signs and symptoms of addiction and the steps to take when seeing these signs in a loved one. We will also explain the importance of community members having Naloxone on hand to treat emergency overdose.”
