Looking to brush up your Spanish or English skills? Come to the Johnson City Public Library! Our Spanish – Ingles conversation group is now meeting on Thursday nights from 6:00-7:00 PM in the Blue Plum study room. All skills levels are welcome for this free event open to the public, and no registration is required.
Callie Longo, a JCPL volunteer and the group facilitator, says this group began meeting over a year ago. “While I was in college I studied Spanish and traveled abroad. However, once I settled into a regular job there was no way for me to practice Spanish. It occurred to me to check with the library about programs like this, so I came and when I saw there wasn’t a group already, I asked to start one.” Longo says there tends to be a good range of skill levels, with a noticeable number of beginners.
She also adds that this is usually a small group of 3-5 people, which is good for a single conversation. New attendees should expect conversation to be roughly half in English and half in Spanish, although there’s probably a little more Spanish than English. She adds that it’s a good opportunity to learn Spanish together with other people. At the same time, it’s a nice opportunity to learn about other things and get to know other people as well. Longo says, “it’s great to have it at the library! Thanks to the library’s resources, you can learn other things you didn’t know you wanted to learn.” She also encourages more native Spanish speakers to join. “There’s no replacement for native speakers!”
