Join us at Johnson City Brewing Company on Wednesday, October 24 from 7-9 p.m. for an evening of spine-tingling terror! Enjoy a few pints while watching or acting out two spooky radio show performances from the 1930s and 40s: a 1931 transcript of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and a 1943 version of Agatha Christie’s The ABC Murders. This free event is open to the public, but you must be 21+ to attend.
Lisa Krekelberg, JCPL Adult Services Librarian, is excited about the show because it is so unique. Lisa hasn’t seen other libraries, including JCPL, host a Halloween event like this. She says, “we partnered with Open Doors Coffeehouse last October for scary story readings, which was great, but this year’s radio show is distinct in that it will actively engage the audience.” While attendees can sit back, enjoy a few drinks, and watch the show, they are also welcome to read parts in the radio scripts.
This event is also special because it’s a partnership between a library and a brewery. Lisa says she hasn’t heard of this type of collaboration before. Lisa and Kat Bronson Latham, Johnson City Brewing Company’s owner, see this combined event as important because, as Lisa says, “we believe that working with our neighbors creates a stronger, more vibrant downtown area.”
Another plus of us partnering with a brewery is that you get a chance to win free drinks! At the library, we have a display set up on the second floor featuring books about “brews and boos”, in the spirit of Halloween. You’ll find a raffle bookmark in each display book for two free pints at Johnson City Brewing Company. To be entered in the raffle, fill out the back of the bookmark and present it, along with a photo ID, at the Circulation Desk when you check out the book. Two lucky winners will be announced on Monday, October 22 (just in time for Wednesday’s radio show)!
Johnson City Brewing Company is located at 257 E. Main St. in Johnson City. Learn more about the brewery here. For more information about the radio show or raffle contest, please contact Lisa Krekelberg at 423-434-4454 or email@example.com.
