Your Library’s Bilingual Family Storytime meets the first and third Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. The next session is on Monday, March 20.
The program provides age-appropriate stories and simple activities for children ages 2-6 and their families. All stories are presented in English and Spanish. The sessions are led by area teacher Mar Carter.
Youth Services Manager Betty Cobb explains that one of the Library’s goals in hosting this unique program is “to help children have an easier time adjusting to an English-speaking environment,” which will help them as they enter kindergarten. And, she says, this also applies to English-speaking parents who want to introduce their children to a second language early.
The program is also meant to accommodate more Spanish-speaking families. Betty says, “The Library is a place where anyone in the community is welcome and can find needed resources. We want our children’s storytimes to reflect that.” Storytimes are well-situated to serve as social spaces where English- and Spanish-speaking parents come together over the shared value of wanting the best for their children.
