This month’s Book Scouts introduces children’s books in the vein of “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. “Avatar” is a timeless epic. Its world- and character-building are still some of the best ever seen in a show developed for children. Looking back on it now, it was also well ahead of its time in terms of diversity and inclusion.
With a resurgence of interest in the show (thanks to its Netflix debut), many children (and adults!) are now discovering the series for the first time. If your child has fallen in love with the “Avatar” world and is looking for similar stories, we’ve got some titles that will satisfy their craving!
JCPL’s Jennifer Johnson highlights a few books in the video below. You can browse the list below the video for even more recommendations. These titles are geared toward kids ages 8-12, but they may also appeal to teens and adults who love the series. All these stories feature some combination of diverse characters, magic-infused worlds with heavy Eastern influences, Chosen One story arcs, or ragtag groups of heroes on a quest to save their worlds.
