Your Library is excited to offer a new monthly school age program called Book Scouts! Kids ages 8 to 12 will explore reading recommendations and discover new titles based on their interests and favorite books with the help of librarians. The next program is on Thursday, October 17 from 6-7 p.m. and will focus on spooky books (just in time for Halloween!). Registration is required and can be completed here.
School Age Program Coordinator Jennifer Johnson says she’s excited about this new program because it’s a fresh take on the Library’s middle grade book clubs. Instead of focusing on one book that kids read beforehand, which she says “can seem a little academic and homework-y,” children can discover a lot of great books in our youth collection based on their favorite topics and titles. Jennifer explains, “In my experience, kids are more excited about reading when it’s interest-driven. By focusing on high-interest topics and read-alikes for popular series, I’m hoping to capitalize on that interest to introduce kids to a whole new world of books.” Jennifer hopes that kids will find genres that they might not have tried before, like non-fiction or graphic novels.
