Book Scouts: “I Survived” Series Read-Alikes

Your Library is excited to offer a monthly school age program called Book Scouts for kids ages 8-12. They explore reading recommendations with the help of librarians and discover new titles based on their interests and favorite books. The next program is on Thursday, December 19 from 6-7 p.m. and will focus on finding books similar to the popular I Survived series. Registration is required and can be completed here.

School Age Program Coordinator Jennifer Johnson says she loves this program because it’s a fresh take on the Library’s middle grade book clubs. Instead of focusing on one book that kids read beforehand, which she says “can seem a little academic and homework-y,” children can discover a lot of great books in our youth collection based on their favorite topics and titles. Jennifer explains, “In my experience, kids are more excited about reading when it’s interest-driven. By focusing on high-interest topics and read-alikes for popular series, I’m hoping to capitalize on that interest to introduce kids to a whole new world of books.” Jennifer hopes that kids will find genres that they might not have tried before, like non-fiction or graphic novels.
