Teen Advisory Board Creates Unique Space for Teens

Your Library’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is a group of teens that gives recommendations for the Library’s teen space, collection, and programs. TAB is open to anyone age 12-18 who is interested in helping make the Library a fun and welcoming place for teens.

TAB meets on the fourth Thursday every month to share thoughts and give suggestions for teen programs and materials to add to our young adult collection. The group’s next meeting is Thursday, March 23 at 6 p.m. in the teen area. Call (423) 434-4349 or stop by the Library to find out more and join TAB.

What TAB Offers Teens

Young Adult Librarian Amy Taylor says that TAB provides teens with important opportunities and valuable life skills. “TAB offers teens ownership of the Library’s teen area, and a sense that they belong and their opinions are valued,” she explains. “Plus, being involved in group decision-making for an organization builds teens’ leadership and teamwork skills.”

Teens also earn volunteer service hours by participating in TAB. So along with helping make their Library a space that welcomes teens, they can also strengthen their college applications or resumés.

What TAB Does

TAB helps choose the books for the Library’s monthly Teen Book Club and regularly gives recommendations for future teen programs and materials for young adults.

TAB members have also taken on larger, special projects in the past. TAB applied for, presented, and won a health initiative grant from ETSU Elevates in 2019. The grant enabled TAB and the Library to host a weeklong program about teen mental health in 2022. In 2020, TAB members gave input for the City of Johnson City’s Child Friendly Cities Initiative, which helps the City improve the lives of its kids and young people.

“Ultimately,” Amy says, “TAB’s ideas and feedback help ensure that their Library’s teen area is a safe, supportive, and positive space where all teens feel welcome. TAB helps create a space for teens that is uniquely their own.”
