Big thank you to our very own Donna McCalman, Youth Services Librarian, for sharing her thoughts on this moving book!
It’s not often that I get to the end of a new picture book and say “Oh” aloud as I turn to the last page. The Rough Patch, by Brian Lies, triggered just such a response. It is the story of the great sadness that overshadows a farmer after the loss of his beloved dog. This is one of the most touching and accessible books about grief and healing that I’ve read for children, written in an honest and hopeful voice. It is a thoughtful book, in all senses of the word. If you’re struggling with how to talk with your child about loss and grieving, sharing this story could be a helpful way to begin the conversation.
Youth Services actually provides several booklists that include titles like The Rough Patch, as a way of assisting you and your children as you navigate challenging experiences. Whether you’re moving to a new home, dealing with a serious illness, or coping with the death of a family member or pet, we are here to help! (We also have lists on perennial childhood favorites like trains, pirates, and princesses.) If there’s a topic you are interested in, heavy or light, call 423-434-4458 or ask at the Youth Services Desk.
