NPR’s 2018 Book Concierge

NPR released its annual book concierge recently, which aggregates hundreds of 2018 recommendations from NPR staffers, book critics, and authors. You can find the list here. You’ll see that all the recommendations are tagged with specific labels that work as filters, such as book club ideas, young adult, memoirs, cookbooks, and more. These labels help you narrow down the list of over 300 titles to the perfect combination for you. For example, if you need a book club idea and you’re interested in historical fiction, you can create a filter with those two categories and come up with great choices like Varina by Charles Frazier or Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver.

Each book also includes a link allowing you to see if JCPL or another OWL library has the title you want in our collection. Select the “Find at your library” option and the concierge will direct to OCLC WorldCat, the world’s largest library catalog. From there click on “Find a library” at the top of the webpage, and then search for Johnson City Public Library. You can also search our collection for the recommended titles here. And, be sure to check R.E.A.D.S. as well if you’re interested in an ebook or audiobook that you can download anytime, anywhere.

Our library staff also read a lot and are always happy to provide book recommendations! Stay tuned to our blog, Facebook, and Instagram in the coming weeks for our own list of 2018 recommendations.
