Circulation Clerk I, Shelver, Part-Time

Johnson City Public Library Circulation Department has an opening for a part-time Circulation Clerk I. The Circulation department is the first touchpoint of service in the library. Staff in this position are expected to offer a high level of welcoming customer service to library guests. Primary responsibilities include shelving, assisting patrons at the circulation desk and with curbside deliveries, collecting library usage statistical data, and readers advisory.

Distinguishing Features of the Classification: A staff member in this position is generally the first point of service for patrons. This position provides general library service in a fast-paced work environment. The position is entry-level, involving mainly routine work according to set procedures, generally basic and manual in nature. This position will primarily perform work at the Circulation desk but may be called upon to work any public service desk in the library. Duties are performed under the close direction of a supervisor; all work is evaluated through conferences and observations.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to provide friendly and quality customer service. Ability to follow set procedures and routines in an accurate manner. Working knowledge of standard library techniques, practices, and procedures. Ability to work independently once familiar with departmental operations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library personnel and the public. Knowledge of the practical application of computer operations and procedures.

Desirable Experience and Education: Graduation from high school/GED or any combination of experience and training in the clerical field which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform tasks with computers, cash handling, etc. preferred. Public library experience is preferred.

Other Requisites: From time to time the incumbent may be assigned special duties by a superior or, on a temporary basis, may be asked to assist other employees occupying a different position. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Task involves routine physical effort, i.e., some standing, walking, frequent lifting, climbing, stretching, pushing, pulling (5-40+ pounds); manual dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of shop and office equipment; may involve extended periods of sitting at a keyboard.

Work at the Circulation Desk demands some repetitive motions.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Task is regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes). Occasional exposure to wind, rain, snow, or hot or cold temperatures during outdoor book drop retrieval and curbside pick-up.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Task requires sound perception and discrimination. Task requires visual perceptions and discrimination. Task requires oral communications ability.

This is a part-time (20 hours per week) position. Starting pay in this classification is $11.18 per hour.
