Johnson City Public Library has an opening for full-time Clerk II in our Children’s Library. A staff member in this position provides public service and does clerical duties under the direction and supervision of the Children’s Library Manager. All work is evaluated through conferences and observations.
The Library is seeking an approachable and self-motivated person, someone who is friendly with excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate with both children and caretakers. A person in this position is expected to provide quality customer service and readers advisory to children and caretakers. They must have the ability to work effectively and courteously with the public, work independently, and with a team under the direction of the Children’s Library Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides a welcoming and safe environment for guests of the Children’s Library
- Provides direct service to patrons at the Children’s Library desk and by phone
- Decorates the Children’s Library and makes in-house signs/marketing materials for the Children’s Library
- Assists with craft and prop preparation for programming
- Works directly with teen volunteers
- May assist with book delivery to outside organizations as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
General knowledge of library routine. General knowledge of library techniques, systems, and procedures. General knowledge of books and materials for children. Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library personnel and patrons. Creative abilities to enhance patron library visits. Working knowledge of the practical application of computer operations and procedures. Skilled in serving patrons satisfactorily.
Desirable Experience and Education: A high school diploma with some college is required. Preferred: library experience, conversational Spanish skills, experience working with children; experience using Canva or other graphic design tools
Other Requisites: From time to time the incumbent may be assigned special duties by a superior or, on a temporary basis, may be asked to assist other employees occupying a different position. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks involve some physical effort, i.e. some standing and walking, or frequent light lifting (10-25 pounds) or other restricted physical activities. Manual dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs or body in the operation of shop and office equipment; may involve extended periods of sitting at a keyboard.
A valid Driver’s License is required.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Task requires sound perception and discrimination. Task requires visual perception and discrimination. Task requires oral communications ability.
Hours: Full-time, evening and weekend work is required
