Booyah! Your Library’s fifth annual fandom convention, LibCon V: High Fives and Rad Vibes, is on Saturday, July 15. This year’s theme is 1980s/90s nostalgia, so grab your scrunchies, dust off your Walkman, and join us for the throwback extravaganza from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.! LibCon is free and family-friendly.

This year’s LibCon will feature 1980s/90s-themed activities, including karaoke, Mad Libs, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. gaming, and a retro dance party. There will be kids’ activities as well, including a slap bracelet craft and ‘zine-making. Local vendor booths will also be set up for you to peruse throughout the day.

Along with nostalgia-themed activities, we encourage you to dress up in your favorite fandom cosplay! Even though LibCon is 80s/90s-themed this year, all fandom types are welcome.

We’re also holding a cosplay contest that anyone can enter. You have to register for the contest online!

First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded in the following categories: children, teen, and adult. Keep in mind that costumes must follow the Library’s Code of Conduct.

LibCon is your Library’s version of Comic-Con, the popular fandom convention. Children’s Librarian Jennifer Johnson believes that putting on a Comic-Con style event is a natural fit for the Library.

“At their core, these conventions are celebrations of beloved stories and they build a sense of community over shared interests, which are both vital elements of the Library’s work.”

Jennifer Johnson, Children’s Librarian

While there are similarities to traditional fandom conventions, LibCon is unique in that it is free and family-friendly. LibCon is designed to be an inclusive experience that allows people of all ages to be, as Jennifer puts it, “their nerdiest selves.”

Visit our totally rad LibCon website for the cosplay contest registration, full convention day schedule, and list of vendors. You’ll also find 1980s/90s music playlists and booklists compiled by Library staff.
