After an extensive national search, the Johnson City Public Library Board of Directors announces the hiring of Julia Turpin of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina as the library’s new director. Julia comes to Johnson City from the Appalachian Regional Library, where she has served as Wilkes County Librarian since October 2014. She fills a vacancy created in March when Robin Westphal resigned to take a position as the state librarian for Missouri. Gina Thayer-Coleman has served as interim director.
Julia Turpin has been working in libraries for 11 years. She currently serves as the Wilkes County Librarian, within the Appalachian Regional Library System in North Wilkesboro, NC. Julia has a BA in English from the University of Louisville, and an MLS from the University of Kentucky. She began her professional career as the Adult Services Librarian of the Henry County Public Library in Eminence, KY. Julia created the library’s first Adult Summer Reading program and worked to incorporate and establish the Friends of the Library as a nonprofit. She then spent 3 years as director of the Taylor County Public Library in Campbellsville, KY. Julia oversaw the library’s move into a newly renovated location. which led to expansion of library programs, staffing, and services.
Her recent work in Wilkes County includes expansion of key community partnerships. She seeks cooperation with other community stakeholders to find common goals. Julia was also a design team member for “Raising Places,” a national program facilitated by Greater Good Studio and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. “Raising Places” used Human-Centered Design to identify specific community challenges and test solutions. Julia believes that strong communities build strong libraries.

Julia Turpin will start work as Johnson City Public Library Director in late August.
