Adult Book Discussion Groups

For more information and to register for Tales & Talk or Rebellious Reads, call 423-434-4454, email the Adult Services Department, or visit the Information Desk on the library’s second floor.

Rebellious Reads

Tackle controversial, banned, and challenged books by joining Rebellious Reads, a fresh, thought-provoking book club for the intrepid reader. While the topics covered may be unsettling for some readers, all books chosen are works that have achieved a substantial and lasting literary significance. Group members discuss the books in a respectful atmosphere that supports a platform for expression and cultivates empathy and perspective. Special loan copies are provided for the first 10 registrants; additional copies are available for checkout at JCPL, other libraries in our consortium, and R.E.A.D.S. The group meets four times a year at off-site, downtown locations.

Tales & Talk

Tales & Talk is a book discussion group that meets on the second Thursdays of March, April, May, September, October, and November. Discussions are held from 10:30 a.m.- 12 p.m. in the library’s second floor board room. Adult Services librarians select titles from a variety of genres that address thought-provoking topics. Lively discussions are led by librarians for a deeper understanding of these works. A limited number of book copies are available to regular group attendees to borrow or to purchase, and Adult Services staff can assist members with borrowing additional copies from area libraries.

Traveling Tales

Traveling Tales is a collection of book discussion kits that are available to library patrons who want to start or facilitate a book discussion group. Each kit contains up to 12 copies of the book along with a reading guide, and may be checked out for eight weeks. Kits are checked out to one member of the group, and include a sign-out sheet for the group to keep track of the books. Kits are checked out at, and must be returned to, the Circulation Desk on the library’s first floor; kits cannot be put in the outside book drop box, and all the books must be returned at one time – group members cannot return books individually. Click here to browse the library’s available Traveling Tales kits.
