“They were looking to belong.” – S. E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, 1967
Nothing changes faster than a teenager, which is why we’re committed to being a safe, constant space for every teen in Johnson City. We know teens have their own needs—they need their own space, their own media, and their own support and programs. We’re committed to providing that with both fiction and non-fiction Teen books and DVDs, plus our extensive graphic novel collection, divided into manga, superhero, and literary graphic novel sections. Teens are also welcome to use any other materials in the library, including our Tennessee Room, providing useful information for local history projects in school. The teen space is located on the first floor and is restricted to teens only.
Teens have their own programs as well—our Teen events vary monthly, and may include book clubs, game nights, craft events, and more. We are also always ready to help with school research projects, and we have a teen-only volunteer program, VolunTeens, that designed to fulfill school service requirements and any teen’s desire to give back to the community. VolunTeens can also serve on our Teen Advisory Board and be a part of the decision-making process for teen materials and programming.
It may be said all the time, but we definitely believe it’s true—teens are our future, and we want you to be a part of the future and the present here at the library. Let us know if there are materials or programs you could use that we don’t already offer. Come on in, you belong here.
