Do you have an aspiring artist in your family? In Art Explorers, our monthly program for ages 8-12, kids get to discover art history through hands-on creative projects.

In each session kids learn about a famous historical or contemporary artist. They discover the most important and fun facts about the artist and the iconic style they use. Then kids get to try out the featured artistic style for themselves.

Library Assistant Mirissa Walters leads the program. She says, “My hope is that in creating something they can take with them, kids will retain and appreciate what they’ve learned about the artists and their works.”

The next Art Explorers meets Friday, March 13 at 4 p.m. in the Library’s Jones Meeting Center. Registration is required; click here to sign up.

This month we’ll talk about Michelangelo, one of history’s most accomplished and well-documented artists. He was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet working in the 16th century Renaissance. His creative mastery of several art forms led Michelangelo to be known as the archetypal Renaissance man. He’s most famous for his flawless sculptural interpretations of David and the Piéta, the Sistine Chapel’s painted ceiling, and the architectural wonder of St. Peter’s Basilica.

This month’s featured craft, in honor of Michelangelo, is going to get messy. We’ll lay under the tables, painting overhead just as Michelangelo did to complete the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Kiddos should come prepared to get paint on themselves and learn a lot!
