Do you have an aspiring artist in your family? In Art Explorers, our monthly program for ages 8-12, kids get to discover art history through hands-on creative projects.
In each session kids learn about a famous historical or contemporary artist. They discover the most important and fun facts about the artist and the iconic style they use. Then kids get to try out the featured artistic style for themselves.
Library Assistant Mirissa Walters leads the program. She says, “My hope is that in creating something they can take with them, kids will retain and appreciate what they’ve learned about the artists and their works.”
The next Art Explorers meets Friday, February 13 at 4 p.m. in the Library’s Jones Meeting Center. Registration is required; click here to sign up.
We’ll learn about Banksy, an anonymous street artist based in England. While Banksy’s real identity is unknown, his graffiti style is widely recognized. Banksy secretly creates graffiti art on city streets, walls, and bridges around the world using a distinctive stenciling technique. The artist’s work often has satirical or subversive meanings, and is widely seen as social and political commentary.
To make stencil graffiti like Banksy’s, we’ll create our own stencils, then use sponges to dab paint through the stencils onto a background.
