Teen Services Library Clerk, Part Time

Johnson City Public Library’s User Services Department has an opening for a part-time Teen Services Library Clerk 1. A person in this position performs library work in assisting with programs and activities. They provide public service for users of the Teen Space, young adult collections, and general collections of the library with direct supervision.

Distinguishing Features of the Classification: A staff member in this position provides informational and research service to the public in the User Services Department of the Library with particular focus on the Teen Space. The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, instruction on library and computer usage, assistance with the development and execution of programs and exhibits, and assistance with the maintenance of the collection for teens. Work is performed under general direction from the Assistant Director of User Services. All work is evaluated through conferences and observations for soundness of judgment, innovation, and initiative in developing the assigned areas.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides in-person informational and research services and computer assistance to the public
  • Provides direct service to patrons of all ages at the Information Desk and Teen Services Desk
  • Participates in developing engaging displays for the Teen Space
  • Assists programming staff with material preparation and execution as needed
  • Works directly with teen volunteers
  • Ensures that library policies, Code of Conduct, and procedures are followed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

The Library is looking for someone who enjoys working with tweens and teens and wants to be part of a dynamic team dedicated to excellent service. They should have general knowledge of library routine and procedures in the area of assignment, and general knowledge of library techniques, systems and procedures. General knowledge of collections and services for teens is preferred.  Spanish language skills are preferred.

Experience and Education: High school diploma or equivalent; a combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform job duties is required. Some college and public library experience is preferred.

Other Requisites: From time to time the incumbent may be assigned special duties or, on a temporary basis, may be asked to assist other employees occupying a different position. ADA Requirements: Tasks involve some physical effort, i.e. some standing and walking, or frequent light lifting (5-20 pounds) or other restricted physical activities, as well as manual dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of shop and office equipment. Tasks involve extended periods of sitting at a keyboard.

Environmental Requirements: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g. dirt, cold, rain, fumes).

Sensory Requirements: Tasks require sound perception and discrimination; visual perception and discrimination; and oral communications ability.

Classification and Compensation: Starting pay in this classification is $11.86 per hour. The typical schedule will be 24 hours per week. Evening and weekend work is required.
