Johnson City Public Library’s User Services Department is seeking a Librarian with a strong focus on adult collection development. This position leads the selection, evaluation, and management of materials for the adult collection, ensuring it remains current, diverse, and responsive to community needs, and is in alignment with library goals.
In addition to collection responsibilities, the Librarian provides information services, research support, readers’ advisory, and basic technology assistance to patrons. They participate in library committees, help enforce library policies and procedures, and offer guidance to library assistants and clerks. When serving as the senior staff member on duty, they oversee operations in the User Services area. Performance is assessed through regular conferences and observations, with attention to judgment, initiative, and innovation in managing assigned duties.
The ideal candidate is approachable, self-motivated, and committed to delivering high-quality customer service. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills are essential, along with a solid understanding of library practices, instructional methods, and technology. Candidates must be able to work both independently and collaboratively under the supervision of the Assistant Director of User Services. Proficiency in data analysis and a solid understanding of collection development methodology are also required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Deliver and model outstanding customer service to all patrons.
- Select and maintain adult materials in both physical and digital formats, ensuring collections remain current, relevant, and responsive to community needs.
- Collaborate with colleagues involved in collection development to evaluate and enhance the overall library collection.
- Provide research assistance, readers’ advisory, and information services using the library’s full range of resources.
- Offer instruction and troubleshooting support for public computers, printing services, digital collections, and other technology-related needs.
- Uphold library policies and procedures to promote a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to strengthen skills and stay informed on trends in librarianship.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, both independently and in collaboration with the team.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library science and the ability to instruct others in the applications of these principles and practices. Knowledge of and desire to explore trends and innovations in the field. Ability to plan and direct the work of staff engaged in providing reference services, collection development, adult programming, digital literacy instruction, and marketing. Has excellent communication skills and presents ideas effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all library personnel and the public.
Desirable Experience and Education: A master’s degree in library science is required. Some applicable experience with collection development is desired.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks involve some physical effort, including standing and walking, frequent light lifting (5-10 pounds), or other restricted physical activities. Manual dexterity is needed in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of shop and office equipment. This position involves extended periods of sitting at a computer. This position may require driving the library vehicle.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Task requires sound perception and discrimination. Task requires visual perception and discrimination. Task requires oral communications ability.
Hours: Full-time, evening and weekend work is required
Classification and compensation: This is a 40-hour per week non-exempt position; Annual starting salary: $42,656. Competitive benefits package that includes paid vacation, sick, and holiday leave; medical, dental, vision, life insurance as well as retirement benefits.
