General Description: This temporary position provides public service for patrons in the Children’s Library and assists with shelving materials within the Children’s Library collection during the Summer Reading Program.
Distinguishing Features of the Classification: A staff member in this position is a temporary seasonal member of the Children’s Library team who provides public service and shelving duties under direction and supervision from the Assistant Director of Children’s Services. All work is evaluated through conferences and observations for soundness of judgment, innovation, and initiative in performing duties and responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides direct service to children and their caregivers in the Children’s Library, which includes readers advisory, program registration and check-in, general space tidying, and ensuring a welcoming and safe environment is created for all.
- Shelves materials within the Children’s Library collection.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- General knowledge of library routine and procedures in the area of assignment
- General knowledge of library techniques, systems, and procedures
- Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library personnel and patrons
- Creative abilities to enhance patron library visits
- Working knowledge of the practical application of computer operations and procedures
- Skilled in serving patrons satisfactorily
Desirable Experience and Education: Some high school education is required.

Physical Requirements: Tasks involve some physical effort, i.e. such as standing, walking, frequent light lifting (5-25 pounds), or other restricted physical activities. Tasks require manual dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of shop and office equipment. Tasks may involve extended periods of sitting at a keyboard.
Environmental Requirements: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g. dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
Sensory Requirements: Tasks require sound perception and discrimination; visual perception and discrimination; and oral communications ability.
Classification, Compensation, and Schedule: This is a non-exempt, temporary position, with the anticipated employment schedule being May-early August, 2026. Starting pay in this classification is $11.86 per hour. The typical schedule will be 20 hours per week. Evening and weekend work is required.
