Do you have an aspiring artist in your family? In Art Explorers, our monthly program for ages 8-12, kids get to discover art history through hands-on creative projects.
In each session kids learn about a famous historical or contemporary artist. They discover the most important and fun facts about the artist and the iconic style they use. Then kids get to try out the featured artistic style for themselves.
Library Assistant Mirissa Walters leads the program. She says, “My hope is that in creating something they can take with them, kids will retain and appreciate what they’ve learned about the artists and their works.”
The next Art Explorers meets Friday, April 17 at 4 p.m. in the Library’s Jones Meeting Center. Registration is required; click here to sign up.
We’ll talk about the painter Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He’s known as a co-founder of the Cubist movement, a style that breaks up and then reassembles subjects in an abstract form. Using Cubism, an artist depicts the subject from multiple perspectives instead of from a single one to represent the subject in a greater context.
Once we learn about Picasso and the Cubist style, we’ll create abstract faces that mimic his famous painting, “Weeping Woman.”
