Do you have an aspiring artist in your family? In Art Explorers, our monthly program for ages 8-12, kids get to discover art history through hands-on creative projects.

In each session kids learn about a famous historical or contemporary artist. They discover the most important and fun facts about the artist and the iconic style they use. Then kids get to try out the featured artistic style for themselves.

Library Assistant Mirissa Walters leads the program. She says, “My hope is that in creating something they can take with them, kids will retain and appreciate what they’ve learned about the artists and their works.”

The next Art Explorers meets Friday, December 12 at 4 p.m. in the Library’s Jones Meeting Center. Registration is required; click here to sign up.

We’ll learn about the British-Mexican painter Leonora Carrington, who is famous for her Surrealist style. She employed fine brushstroke techniques, carefully layering each one to craft vivid and detailed imagery. Her paintings often featured magic realism expressed through weird creatures, outfits, and situations.

The accompanying craft will be to create “exquisite creatures.” We’ll take a big piece of paper divided into thirds and draw a head, body, and legs in the designated spots. Then we’ll cut them and swap pieces with other friends in the class to create weird or exquisite creatures, just as Leonora Carrington did.
