Craig Charles, a Johnson City-based barber and founder of Crown Cutz Academy of Barber and Style, will talk with ages 12-18 on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. in the Library’s Jones Meeting Center. Registration is required; sign up here.
Charles gave his first haircut at 12 years old to his mom. Little did he know at the time that cutting hair would become his lifelong profession, and that his passion would lead him to educate others.
Charles has a knack for identifying and taking action to address others’ needs. His barbershop opened in 2004, and as it grew he noticed a lack of trained professionals in the region. So, in 2015 he started Crown Cutz Academy with the goal of offering a quality barber education that sets students up for successful careers in the beauty industry.
In two decades of barbering, Charles has talked with and listened to a lot of people. This experience has grown his passion for mental health awareness, and he has taken action to educate barbers and stylists to be stewards of mental health for their clients. Charles is involved with The Confess Project, a group of barber and beauty professionals who address mental health disparities in communities of color.
On Saturday, Oct. 4, Charles will talk with teens at the Library about his involvement in The Confess Project and the importance of mental health.
